And an eleven-hundred-pound animal leaning, kicking, or pushing against a door or window bar is testing that hardware in ways a residential product was never engineered for.

Material selection. Steel and stainless steel are chosen based on how much load-bearing strength and corrosion resistance a given component needs. A stall front carrying a horse’s full weight against it has different requirements than a decorative window grill, even though both have to survive the same barn conditions.

Welded construction. Bolted or riveted joints loosen under repeated stress. Fully welded stall doors and grills hold their shape and strength through years of daily use, which matters just as much for horse safety as for the equipment’s lifespan — a component that shifts or sags creates a hazard, not just an eyesore.

Custom sizing. Barns are rarely built to a single standard, and stall openings often vary from one structure to the next, or even one stall to the next. Custom fabrication means hardware fits the opening it’s going into, rather than forcing the opening to accommodate an off-the-shelf size.

Finishing That Actually Holds Up

Bare or poorly coated steel doesn’t last in a barn — moisture and waste accelerate corrosion fast, and a coating that chips or flakes just gives rust somewhere to start. That’s why finished barn equipment gets professionally coated in rust-inhibiting powder coat or automotive-quality finishes, the same powder coating process used across Double R’s other fabrication work. Sandblasting typically comes first, stripping the surface down properly so the coating has something clean to bond to rather than sealing in existing corrosion.
